Bayreuth EosFit Workshop

Lecturers: Tiziana Boffa-Ballaran (Bayreuth), Ross Angel (Padova)

Dates: 21-22 March, 2024, starting immediately after the closing ceremony of the Annual Meeting of the German Crystallographic Society (DGK) in Bayreuth.

Objectives: Participants will learn how to fit parametric data of volumes and unit-cell parameters as a function of pressure and temperature with Equations of State (EoS), and will learn how to critically evaluate the results in the light of experimental uncertainties and the theoretical basis of EoS.

Prerequisites: The course will be taught in English. A normal level of mathematics for PhD students in sciences and a basic knowledge of equations of state, bulk moduli etc. will be assumed.

Software: Participants will install the EosFit software on their laptops before the workshop and will use the software on their own laptops during the classes.

Registration: The course is free, but the number of participants will be limited. To register for the course, please send us an email with your name and University affiliation.

Venue: The workshop will be held in the building of the Bayerisches Geoinstitut on the campus of the University of Bayreuth.

Accomodation: Workshop participants should organise their own accommodation.

Program

Thursday 21st March, afternoon
  • Brief review of EoS and EoS parameters.
  • Hands-on fitting PV datasets with EosFit-GUI.
  • Identification of data problems.
  • Evaluation of results (esd’s, f-F plots, VCV plots, etc).
Friday 22nd March, 09:00-12:30
  • Fitting cell parameter variations with pressure.
